Oswestry is sited in the North of Shropshire in the borderlands between England and Wales, and the many Welsh names of various streets evidence a more turbulent aspect to its past. Today it is principally a shopping and market town with its typical narrow passageways giving it the hallmark of a town steeped in history. English Walls, Welsh Walls, The Bailey and the Horsemarket are the principal streets linked by this maze. With a variety of larger and smaller shops, it fulfils many needs for the local and less local community.

A Conservation Area has been declared in the majority of the town centre which contains a mixture of architectural styles. Timbered houses and Georgian architecture sit side by side and there are many large and splendid town houses.

Oswestry was clearly a walled town for some of its history, and the medieval past is displayed on a street plan showing this. There is a tourist centre at Mile End.
